![]() THe Zenith antenna works very well but it is unwieldy for travel packing, so I will probably try some retractable rabbit ears shortly. I plan on traveling with this (motorcycle camping etc) and the smaller the better. It was everything I hoped for and twice as easy. The software did an instant scan of my available signals and just started playing. In the words of Emeril, "BANG!" HD TV on my laptop. Load the disc, drag the file, attach the antenna and plug in the untit. I am using this product with a MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo 2.33 15" with 2g ram:Īfter reading the reviews on antennas, I found a used Zenith on eBay for $20 and ordered it before I ordered the Elgoto Eyetv Hybrid. It is a hybrid, but not in the way I was hoping. The only reason it did not receive a 5-star rating from me is that I took its designation as an analog/digital hybrid a bit too wistfully. At least now the people on screen can be adjusted to have normal flesh tones instead of vaguely orange or vaguely green.Īll in all, for what it was designed to do, the unit is excellent. The EyeTV 3.0 software allows for more control of the screen's features than v2.5-color, hue, brightness, etc.-but if the monitor is not an HD monitor, the picture is good but not great. ![]() Of course, it's probably shielded because I detect no noise interference, either visually or audibly. It gets quite warm during use, but not painfully or even uncomfortably so. The unit is rugged, comes with an end cap like a USB flash drive (meaning the end cap can be misplaced when the unit is in use). And until I installed the Hybrid TV unit, my Bose Companion 5 speaker system never had to be reset in the few weeks I've been using the Hybrid TV, I've had to unplug the unit 5 times to restore sound to my secondary monitor which I use for TV viewing. Keep in mind that use of the small unit requires a physical connection to a TV coaxial cable, so using it with a laptop means the laptop is tethered in place. ![]() Elgato's customer service is BRILLIANTly supportive of the customer, so things turned out okay in the end. Amazon wanted me to exchange the whole unit just because the proof-of-purchase card was missing, and I thought that would result in a waste of resources for everyone involved except the shipping company, so I did the upgrade the hard way. My unit came without the proof of purchase card, so I had to scan my Amazon shipping invoice and the Elgato activation key card to be able to upgrade online. You need both an activation key card and a proof-of-purchase card to upgrade online. It's connected to the computer via a USB 2.0 port and the EyeTV 3.0 software is more stable than the previous version 2.5.2 (but the upgrade is relatively costly if version 2 happened to be the version on the CD packed with the unit). The Elgato Hybrid TV comes with a mini-USB port which allows different input connections to be made (RCA, component video, and S-Video, but NOT HDMI). Your home computer can change channels if the cable signal is analog and is wired directly to the Hybrid TV, but not if the signal comes from a converter box. Unfortunately, the cable box controls the channel selection. Still, if you're willing to string coaxial cable from the set top box in another room, you can watch digital TV on your computer. In the meantime, I'm converting my digital 8 camcorder tape recordings to a digital form I can burn onto a DVD. In effect, non-cable digital video inputs can be put through the Elgato Hybrid, but it does not receive digital channels on cable unless routed through a digital cable box. Slight disappointment: I now receive exactly the same analog channels as before, but can record other inputs digitally via supplied cable. However, we activated digital cable service a few months ago and I got the Elgato Hybrid TV (different brand, same manufacturer-Elgato) thinking I could receive digital channels while bypassing the cable set top box. I had a Migilia TVMicro before this, and was able to receive only analog cable programs.
